Cultural Competence Training for Health Care Professionals

The ability of those in an organization to understand and connect with the community they serve is critical to providing the best possible service.  Cultural competence should be a priority for any health care provider.

DAO Management's cultural competence training provides participants with an improved understanding of their cultures, their organization's culture and the community's culture.  The training provides an opportunity to identify areas of existing competence and to isolate areas where future growth and development may be necessary.

All organizations must prepare their personnel to successfully deal with our multicultural society.  All aspects of the existing health care system require serious change in order to respond to increasing levels of diversity.  Our training helps participants to develop the skills, knowledge and values necessary for effective cross-cultural efforts.

 

Curricula Enhancement Module Series

Cultural Awareness:  The National Center for Cultural Competence observes that cultural awareness is a fundamental element of cultural competence.  In fact, awareness is the very foundation of competence.  Without highly attuned cultural awareness, it's impossible to acquire the skills, attitudes and knowledge necessary develop overall cultural competence.

Cultural Self-Assessment:  Cultural competence isn't just about knowing or understanding "the other".  It's just as important to know oneself.   Understanding yourself is a key to realizing how you think, communicate and deal with others.  DAO Management provides a self-assessment tool that's appropriate for employees at all levels and positions within an organization and that consistently yields extremely valuable information and insight.

The Process of Inquiry-- Communicating in a Multicultural Environment:  Health care providers, the mental health care system and public health organizations relay and receive nearly unthinkable quantities of information every day.  This training discusses the importance of communicating that information and interpreting feedback to it in a diverse context.  It continues by offering practical means by which individuals can improve their communication skills.

Cultural and Linguistic Competence:  This portion of the DAO Management module provides an understanding of the philosophy and principles underlying cultural and linguistic competence.
